Five football players from Rutgers University in New jersey have been criminally charged with assault. The assault occurred in April and the alleged victim is also a Rutgers student. In addition to the criminal charges the players have also been suspended from the football team.
Junior Nadir Barnwell has been suspended from the team indefinitely. In addition to Barnwell, junior Ruthann Peele, sophomore Rahzonn Gross and junior Delon Stephenson have also been criminally charged and suspended.
Rutger’s football begins its football season this Saturday. In addition to the assault charges the football program is also being investigated by the NCAA.
The university spokesman declined to comment on the criminal matter.
The charges stem from an incident in April where the five football players are alleged to have assaulted another group of students leaving one with a broken jaw. The assault is said to have been unprovoked.
The five have been charged with with aggravated assault, riot and conspiracy to commit a riot.
