Police in Saratoga Springs, NY arrested famed jockey Mike Luzzi for domestic hours before he took a mount in a horse race. Luzzzi was charged with domestic abuse specifically strangling and assaulting his wife.
According to police Luzzi’s wife called police after an argument. The argument escalated between the two and turned physical. Police believe that Luzzi strangled hi wife during the fight. When police arrived they noticed bruises on neck. She was taken to the hospital treated for minor injuries and released. Luzzi was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, strangulation, assault. Because children were present during the incident Luzzi was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Luzzi is facing both misdemeanor and felony criminal charges.
The arrest in the early morning hours did not stop him from returning the racetrack later that day to ride a horse. he rode “O K By Me” in the fifth race.
Police report that Luzzi cooperated with police during the arrest.
In addition to the criminal penalties associated with the domestic abuse charge, Luzzi also faces discipline at work. The state Gaming Commission could suspend or revoke his license to race horses
Luzzi, who just returned to racing following and injury he got in November, has earned more 1.7 million dollars racing in over 3,400 attempts.
