A high level federal judge in Connecticut is in hot water after being accused of napping on the job. Judge Ellen Bree Burns, a Senior US District Judge, was allegedly sleeping during the trial of three men who were in custody and on trial for high level narcotics distribution. The 90 year old Judge was seen by many people in the courtroom appearing to be asleep. Judge Burns claimed that she was taking notes and only appeared to be asleep to onlookers.
A number of people at the trial made complaints that Judge Burns appeared to be sleeping multiple times throughout the trial. The complainants were made up of both the supporters and family members of the 3 men on trial for a drug conspiracy. Burns disagreed with the assertion claiming that while she was “bored” during certain segments of the trial- namely during long periods of time listening to audio evidence- that she at no point fell asleep.
Despite the complaints there has been no formal action taken against Judge Burns and she has a number of supporters in the community that back her up and claim that despite her advanced age she is still very healthy, alert and active.
