A Texas judge made a strange proposition to a man in his courtroom. Either get married or go to jail for 15 days. The man, Josten Bundy,19, was before the judge on an assault charge when the judge told him to chose jail or marriage. The man chose to get married.
The strange sentence stemmed from a misdemeanor assault where Bundy admitted to punching his then girlfriend’s (now wife) ex-boyfriend for insulting her. After telling Josten the days or being John Wayne are gone the judge offered jail or marriage within 15 days.
Although relived about avoiding jail the bride preferred to married in a more conventional setting.
In Massachusetts an assault and battery charge carries a two year sentence in the House of correction yet I have never seen or heard a Massachusetts judge order someone to get married rather than go to jail.
