Theodore Doherty, 68 of Charlestown, a former longshoreman was sentenced to one year of probation and to perform community service for his role in a payroll fraud that was conducted at Massport’s Conley Terminal in South Boston. In 2006 20 longshoreman were indicted for allegedly for a variety of payroll scams including putting the names of children of longshoreman on the payrolls so that that they would receive seniority and higher pay when they became eligible to work.
In 2006, this case was on the front pages of the Boston newspapers. The story was a big scandal. Now just two years later this resolution did not appear in the Boston papers. The media loves to report cases the first day but never seems to follow cases like this one.
When this story broke it was a front page scandal and when it resolves it is one year probation and some garbage pickup.
