A Florida tow truck driver was arrested after he mistakenly called 9-1-1 while he was talking about selling drugs. Matthew Dollarhide mistakenly called 9-1-1 while he was driving. During the call, Dollarhide was heard talking about selling drugs. Dispatchers were able to track the location of the call.
During the call, the name Harry was routinely mentioned so when the officers saw a tow truck with Harry’s Towing on it they stopped the truck. Dollarhide and two passengers were surprised when the officer questioned them about selling drugs.
Dollarhide was searched during the stop and a crack pipe was found. He was arrested on drug paraphernalia charges.
From my legal perspective the police officers made a valid stop of the truck because of the open 9-1-1 call. The officer had a legal to stop the truck and question the driver. Of all the numbers to butt dial 9-1-1 is the worst. Dollarhide really needs to apply a password to his phone.
