In a terrible case of animal abuse, John Dugan of Gloucester, Ma is alleged to have butchered his dog after the dog ate his heroin. Mr. Dugan, 26, is currently being held on a $20,000 cash bail set in Gloucester District Court.
Mr. Dugan the owner of a 1 year old pit bull named “Xena” was caught on video surveillance dumping a duffel bag containing the dog in a dumpster. is alleged to have cut the dog open after the dog from the man’s heroin in his home. Mr. Dugan claims that the dog died of seizures and an overdosed. He claims he had to cut the dog open to fit into the bag. Police dismiss that excuse and believe Mr. Dugan cut his dog open to retrieve the eaten heroin.
This is not the first criminal complaint of animal cruelty brought against Mr. Dugan. In 2007, Mr. Dugan was charged with domestic violence and animal cruelty. Then he alleged to have broken his puppy leg when he threw the dog into is crate. Those charges were later dismissed.
Animal cruelty is treated seriously in Massachusetts and in this case I would not be surprised if Mr. Dugan is indicted by the Essex County District Attorney. The penalties Mr. Dugan faces are serious and hopefully he may never own a dog again.
