René Heuillet, a Catholic Priest from France allegedly admitted he stole over $740K from parishioners over the last 25 years. Heuillet, 80, who reportedly confessed to the theft is set to go on trial in January.
Heuillet is alleged to have stolen from the collection plate from 1987 – 2013. He also stole from the votive candle sales. Heuillet’s scam was uncovered by his successor after Heuillet’s retirement. Heuillet presided over a parish in Saint-Lizier France.
Of the $700,000 Heuillet is alleged to have stolen over $650K have been seized from his bank account.
I am curious to see what the sentence the court gives the now retired priest. I believe that court will order restitution and he will have the money in his account forfeited. Whether or not he is sentenced to jail is close call. Most people that steal from a charity are sentenced to jail but in this case the court may consider his age and health. Should Heuillet be sentenced to jail is another story.
