A judge in Ohio jailed a defendant who failed to carry a say calling himself an idiot.
Judge Pinkey Carr ordered Mr. Richard Dameron to carry a sign that said, “I apologize to Officer Simone and all police officers for being an idiot calling 911 threatening to kill you. I’m sorry and it will never happen again.” According to the article, Judge Carr made the sign herself.
This is not the first time that Judge Carr has used sign holding as a punishment. She ordered a motorist that had driven over a sidewalk to get around a school bus to hold a sign saying “idiot”
Mr. Carr who claimed transportation problems as reason for not holding the sign has been ordered to hold the sign when he is released from jail in three months. The judge who made the sign over Memorial Day weekend, said she would drive him herself is need be.
Ordering a defendant to hold a demeaning sign is a rare form of punishment. It is unclear if this would be legal in Massachusetts. I have yet to see order this type of unusual punishment. Letters of apology are routine in criminal cases but not more extreme than that.
