Cynthia Brim a judge in Chicago has been found not guilty by reason of insanity for assaulting a deputy at a security checkpoint. Brim was found not guilty not by a jury but by a Judge after a bench trial.
Judge Brim was charged with battery after she shoved a deputy at a security checkpoint at the Daley Center. When passing thru the security at the Center, Brim asked if the deputies had found any keys. She was then took one set of the keys. Moments later she returned and threw the keys at one deputy and pushed another.
Brim’s lawyer argued that she was insane at the time because she was not taking her prescribed medications. Brim was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
A bench trial is a trial that consists only of a judge. A judge makes rulings on both law and fact.
Brim has been suspended from her job since the incident however she was re-elected to the position of judge last November.
