John Horan, the former president of the MBTA Inspectors Union Local 600, a 300 member MBTA workers union was sentenced to six months in the house of correction after he was convicted of stealing over seventy eight thousand dollars from the union. Horan is the second union member jailed after another member pled guilty earlier in the year.
Horan was convicted of two counts of larceny by a jury in Superior court on December 19. There the jury believed that he had overpaid himself for five years as well as use the union’s credit card for more than three thousand dollars in personal charges.
Suffolk County prosecutors had asked for an eighteen month prison sentence as a deterrent to others who would abuse their positions. Horan who had served for ten years as the president of the union is also required to pay restitution when he is released from jail.
Another member of the union pled guilty earlier in the year to stealing more than $13o,000 from the union.
