After hearing the announcement that she was selected to a jury an obviously upset woman let out what a local Pennsylvania newspaper called “the worst swear word of them all.” Luckily for the woman, the outburst was enough to have her removed from the jury. Unluckily, it also landed her with a fine of $500 and in contempt of court.
The woman, Kathleen Port, repeatedly apologized to Judge Ernest DiSantis, and claimed that she was only upset due to the loss of income she would suffer by missing work. However, as Judge DiSantis pointed out, Port failed to mention that jury service would be a hardship on her juror questionnaire. Judge DeSantis also said that although serving on a jury can often be inconvenient, it is an obligation of citizenship.
