A 16 year old high school student from Mashpee High School on Cape Cod has been charged with threats after making comments on Twitter. Because the boy is a minor and has not yet been charged with a crime his identity has not been released. Before the Mashpee played Rockland High School in basketball, a 16 year old male student was tweeted a comment that he had a gun a would shoot up the place. School officials were made aware of the threats after parents took a photo of the tweets.
School officials state that it went beyond traditional trash talking and the boy committed a crime. The boy was not arrested but will have to face criminal charges in Barnstable Juvenile Court later. It is unclear what charges may be brought but they could include threats and threats to disrupt and school assembly. If the boy is charged with threats to cause a school disruption he may be charged in Barnstable District Court.
Charges like this are now treated very seriously by the police and the District Attorneys in Massachusetts. In this case even though no gun was found extra police were assigned to the game.
